This is ultimately how I think Mass Effect 3 should have and hopefully might (If the Devs listen to us) end. This ending is showing only the Paragon side of things. All through it there naturally would be choices to decide between Paragon and Renegade responses, but I decided to go strictly Paragon for the purposes of this script. This is just a rough example of how I think it should end, taking place just after the whole Star/god child thing, and yes, I do take the Indoctrination Theory into account here.
We see a shot of Shepard, unconscious on the floor of the Citadel control room where he collapsed, his armor burnt practically beyond recognition, dry blood smeared on his face. We can hear in the background the sounds of battle being waged outside. Reaper laser blasts and heavy mass accelerator cannons firing, echoing through the Citadel softly. We Hear Hackett’s voice over the com suddenly, a desperate quality to it.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Commander! Commander, do you read me?
Shepard’s eyes open slowly and he takes a deep and pained breath as he tries to raise his head up, still seeming disoriented and dazed.
SHEPARD: I… I hear you…
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Shepard, it’s not working! The Crucible isn’t firing!
Not responding, Shepard struggles slowly to get to his feet, but doesn’t seem to have the strength left. He slumps back down, his breathing shallow and his eyelids barely staying open.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Commander! The fleets are getting torn apart up here! We wont last another ten minutes if that damn thing doesn’t fire! Do you hear me, Shepard?
Shepard’s eyes open a little wider again and he gets a determined look on his face. He slowly turns his gaze up to the control console that’s just a few feet out of his reach. Mustering any kind of force of will that he has left, he starts to crawl toward it, pulling his burnt form across the hard floor, still not responding to the Admiral’s comm.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Shepard? Commander Shepard??
Shepard reaches a hand up and grabs onto the edge of the console, pulling himself slowly up, leaning against it for all support as he finally taps the comm-piece in his ear.
SHEPARD: I’m at… the console… Give me a minute…
ADMIRAL HACKETT: We don’t have a minute, Commander!
The Commander casts his eye across the holographic display, his vision blurry, not allowing him to distinguish the controls. Suddenly he seems something familiar and he leans in, tapping several buttons on the holo-panel. Almost immediately Avina is projected next to the console, her glowing purplish aura sticking out next to his charred armor.
AVINA: Hello Commander Shepard, and thank you for using Avina. Please be advised, the Citadel is currently experiencing a sever systems malfunction. All non-emergency personnel must evacuate immediately.
SHEPARD: Avina… The Crucible… Why isn’t it activating?
Avina tilts her head slightly to the side, obviously not understanding.
AVINA: I have no information regarding a “Crucible.” I am however detecting a large power fluctuation within the Presidium ring. It appears a foreign piece of technology is attempting to draw power from the Citadel.
SHEPARD: That’s it… That’s the Crucible… I need you… to activate it…
Avina shakes her head.
AVINA: I am sorry. I am not programmed to do that. My code is limited to information and simple interaction simulations. I can however walk you through how to manually do so, if you would like.
Shepard groans slightly and pushes himself off the console, regaining his balance though still looking rather out of it, still clutching his side in pain.
SHEPARD: Okay… tell me what… I need to do…
AVINA: Please proceed back through the way you entered. There will be an elevator on your left exactly eight meters past the entrance. Take this down four levels to Citadel Control.
Shepard nods and reaches down slowly to pick up his pistol off the floor. His gaze drifts over to Anderson’s body and the Commander’s expression hardens before he looks up, defiantly walking back toward the way he entered the room.
This is when the player takes over again completely. Shepard limps carefully back down the path he had walked up earlier, but, as Anderson had mentioned when they first arrived, things have changed. The walls have rearranged themselves slightly and further down the hall on the left side is a single door, the elevator that Avina spoke of. Several husks run at Shepard before he can get to it and he (the player) dispatches them quickly with his pistol.
As the last of the monsters fall however we revert back into a cutscene, Shepard suddenly whips around, his gun still held out, albeit a bit shakily. Standing behind him is the young boy, standing a few yards off, simply staring at him. He speaks in an accusatory manner but his voice is strange, a mix of the child’s and… something else. Something deeper. As for his eyes, they’re lit up a familiar bright pulsing sort of eerie yellow.
BOY: You should have listened. Why didn’t you listen?
Immediately after these words are spoken we hear the blare of the Reapers and Shepard claps his hands to the sides of his head, covering his ears and dropping to his knees as the whole Citadel seems to shake around him.
SHEPARD: No!
As the blaring noise finally subsides, Shepard looks back up and the boy is gone. Slowly he returns to his feet and control is given back to the player. Shepard’s breathing is now far more audible and uneven and you can hear whispers in the background all around him. The player proceeds to the elevator.
Finally he enters the elevator and we switch back to a cutscene. The Commander looks out the large glass window in the elevator’s side as it descends to Citadel Control. The wards are on fire. Explosions light up the buildings protruding from them and Shepard’s grip on the handle of his gun tightens, his hand still shaking.
The elevator stops at Citadel Control and Shepard exit’s into the same Citadel Control room from ME1. Player control is restored again for a moment as the Commander steps forward. At the far end of the room, we see a single figure working on a console with their back to Shepard.
Once within a certain distance, we go into another cutscene as the figure suddenly turns to face the Commander, revealing themselves to be either Kaidan or Ashley, depending on which one died on Virmire. The only difference here is that he/she looks terribly burned, barely recognizable, his/her eyes are lit up the same eerie pulsing yellow, and his/her voice has the same quality to it that the little boy’s had earlier.
KAIDAN/ASHLEY: You could’ve saved me, Commander. You had time! Why didn’t you save me? Why?!
The Reaper blare goes off again and Shepard literally falls to the floor completely, dropping his weapon, crying out in agony. Once again, the blaring passes and the Commander looks up to see that Kaidan/Ashley is no longer there. He looks around frantically before returning to his feet and picking up his gone again.
Control is returned to the player again for a moment and Shepard, even under player control, seems shakier than usual, his breathing practically erratic, his hands shaking even more than before. Shepard moves over to the main console in Citadel Control and interacts with it.
Cutscene again. Shepard looks up and notices the main window for Citadel Control has been locked down, a heavy pressure shutter brought down over it, usually used in case of an emergency breach. Still seeming a bit dazed, the Commander reaches down and presses several buttons on the console. Avina pops up next to him, smiling as usual.
AVINA: Hello again Commander Shepard, how may I assist you?
SHEPARD: Avina… I made it to Citadel Control… What’s next?
AVINA: Power is being allocated to the large chamber adjacent to Citadel Control, and I have lost all internal sensors throughout the area. In order to allow power to proceed to the Presidium Ring, you must first re-establish local connections. This may be achieved at the console before you.
Shepard nods and looks back to the control panel.
SHEPARD: They’re directing… power to this area? Why?
He reaches out and taps one of the holo-displays, typing in some sort of passcode.
SHEPARD: Let’s see what they’re…
The Pressure shutter on the large window in front of the console starts to open.
SHEPARD: …up to…
The pressure shutter opens all the way and Shepard practically falls down again, staggering back in shock, as he sees, just outside the window, in a very large chamber… a second Human Reaper being built. It almost dwarfs the first one at the Collector Base, it’s frame showing that it’s obviously in a slightly more advanced state than the last one too. (Reaper theme music from ME1 here)
SHEPARD: Oh god… They’re building another one…
The Commander stares at it blankly for several moments, its large dead eyes staring back at him. Finally his gaze turns down to the console again and he steps forward, slightly more confidently, that look of determination returning to his face. He begins quickly tapping the holographic display.
SHEPARD: They must be using the Citadel to speed up this thing’s construction… Avina, I’m going to reallocate power to the Ring. How long until it…
Suddenly the whole room starts shaking and Shepard staggers back, trying to keep his balance. We hear the roar of a Reaper and suddenly the whole ceiling of the Citadel Control room is ripped off, Avina’s projection disappearing almost instantly, bits and pieces of metal and wires flying everywhere, sparks shooting off in every direction. The Commander hits the ground as the room is completely exposed to the outer chamber where the Human Reaper is.
Slowly, Shepard gets back on his feet and turns around to come face to face with Harbinger, its four eerie yellow eyes (Reminiscent of the ones we saw on the boy and Kaidan/Ash earlier) within a mere few yards of him. We see it throw what’s left of the section of the room it ripped off aside, its piercing gaze never wandering from the Commander. Shepard takes a couple of steps back carefully.
HARBINGER: Shepard. You do not understand what you do. Your actions would condemn this galaxy to annihilation.
The Commander hesitates for a moment, glancing down at his pistol on the floor near Harbinger that he dropped.
SHEPARD: From where I’m standing… You’re the ones doing the annihilating.
HARBINGER: A limited viewpoint, born of ignorance. We are your salvation through destruction.
Shepard suddenly steps forward defiantly, seeming almost to forget the situation he’s in at Harbinger’s words.
SHEPARD: You say that… But when I look around, all I see is death. You claim to be helping us and yet all you do is harvest us. Twist us to suit your own sick needs!
HARBINGER: No. We preserve organic life in a form that is eternal. Our form.
SHEPARD: Why? Why do you do this? How can you possibly believe that this…
The Commander gestures out toward the not yet active Human Reaper and the tubes of genetic material feeding into it.
SHEPARD: …is at all salvation??
Harbinger doesn’t answer for a moment, seeming almost as if he’s trying to make up his mind about something as he stares stalwartly at the human before him.
HARBINGER: We, those which you know as Reapers, were created to quell the chaos of organic evolution. You grow, evolve, advance… and yet you do not understand the damaged that you cause through your mere existence.
Shepard steps forward again, his tone one of pure hatred and outrage.
SHEPARD: Then make me understand! Tell. Me. Why!!
HARBINGER: Your kind utilizes the technology of the Relays. Our technology. If we had not left these artifacts - the Relays, the Citadel - your use of this technology would have grown unchecked and in an unforeseen direction as it did for the First Ones.
SHEPARD: The First Ones?
HARBINGER: The Originators. The first of true Organic life. Our creators.
The Commander blinks, taken off guard by this information for a second.
SHEPARD: You were made by Organics?
HARBINGER: Yes. We are their solution to the Decay.
SHEPARD: Decay? Decay of what?
HARBINGER: Everything. The Originators were the first to develop the technology of the Relays, but they soon found that the use of it was dangerous. Their galaxy was dying around them. Their stars decaying. And so they created us.
SHEPARD: Dark Energy… Is that what you’re talking about? Like the sun on Haestrom??
HARBINGER: Yes. The technology of the Relays are the pinnacle of scientific evolution… and all Organic life must eventually achieve it. We were created to keep the chaos, the darkness, from destroying everything. From ending all life. This solution however… is flawed. We have searched for millennia for our own, attempting more times than you can possibly comprehend to find a way to end the threat posed by your kind. And now, in Humanity, we have found it.
SHEPARD: Humanity? Why us? What makes us so special?
Shepard points out at the Human Reaper as he says this last line.
HARBINGER: You are different. More diverse. The key lies within your very structure. Hidden.
SHEPARD: What the hell are you talking about?
HARBINGER: You are our solution. A way to end the threat posed by Organic life and to stop the cycle.
The Commander, his expression one almost of disbelief, turns his gaze from Harbinger, looking across the vast chamber to the Human Reaper.
SHEPARD: You’re telling me that that thing can end all this? The Dark Energy? The destruction?
HARBINGER: Yes. Your species will be ascended, brought into harmony with us, and the chaos, the darkness, will be destroyed.
Shepard looks over his shoulder, still in shock.
SHEPARD: And Humanity?
HARBINGER: You will cease to exist… as will we… but the rest of Organic life will be spared.
The Commander speaks again, a little quieter and more thoughtfully.
SHEPARD: Salvation through destruction…
He turns around completely to face Harbinger again.
SHEPARD: But what about the Crucible? Where does that factor in?
HARBINGER: Another creation of the First One’s. A design passed down through the cycles. A weapon to be used against their solution.
SHEPARD: You mean you.
HARBINGER: That is correct. Some of the First Ones did not agree with the solution. They believed Organic life should be free to decide its own future, even if it meant the end of this galaxy. And so they designed what you call “The Crucible,” a machine created to destroy us. Many cycles have attempted to use it but none have been successful. We cannot allow your kind to continue to evolve uninhibited.
SHEPARD: But this… this cant be the only way… There has to be another way!
HARBINGER: There is not. Join us, Shepard. Help us to quell the chaos of Organic evolution. To end the darkness.
The Commander looks down, shaking his head, confused.
SHEPARD: I… I don’t…
HARBINGER: It is inevitable. You cannot resist.
(NOTE: This is where Shepard has to make a major decision. Whether to accept the Reapers deal, sacrifice the human race, and preserve the rest of the galaxy and all it’s species as well as deal with the Dark Energy problem, OR to tell Harbinger to go jump off a cliff and that the galaxy will find a way to deal with the Dark Energy problem themselves. Another note is that the Indoctrination sequence with the Catalyst factors in here. If you chose anything but destroy, the player is given no choice and Shepard simply gives into Harbinger’s demands. If the player chose the destroy option, however, Shepard has the full ability to choose for himself. For the sake of this script, I will go with the destroy option.)
Shepard stares down at the ground for a minute silently, his fists clenched, his mind racing to assimilate all the information that was just dumped on him.
SHEPARD: No… No! I’m not going to sacrifice a whole race for something that may not happen for hundreds if not thousands of years! We’ll figure this out on our own! Without the First One’s “Solution!”
A dead silence follows, both the Commander and Harbinger simply staring at each other, Shepard with determination in his eyes, Harbinger with not even a sound or a movement. Finally, the Reaper speaks.
HARBINGER: You are a fool, Shepard. You should have submitted when you had the chance.
Shepard glances down at the pistol on the floor and then over at the main Citadel Control room console.
SHEPARD: Go to hell…
Suddenly Shepard jumps forward, scooping his pistol up off the floor and making a dash for the panel, putting round after round into Harbinger’s eyes as he does, with little if any effect. Harbinger reels back for a moment, powering up one of his beam weapons, but a moment too late. Shepard taps the holographic display frantically.
SHEPARD: Admiral Hackett, this is Shepard! The Crucible is firing! I repeat, the Crucible is…
The beam slams into the Citadel Control room floor and the Commander does a dive back, barely avoiding it as it slices through the hard metal, Harbinger’s blaring suddenly growing very strong, practically shaking the whole area. Shepard turns to face his enemy, who is already powering up a second beam weapon, when the whole floor of the room gives way and Shepard falls out into the large chamber where the Human Reaper is being stored.
We suddenly cut to a scene out in space, in orbit around Earth, where we can see the Citadel floating miles above the surface, the charred debris of ships surrounding it. The fight with the Reapers is still going on. All the fleets are holding out as best they can but with each passing second, another red beam slices through a friendly cruiser or another reactor goes critical, resulting in a massive explosion, bits of metal and burning bulkheads being shot out into the vacuum of space.
We see a scene of Admiral Hackett, standing with his hands clasped behind his back on the bridge of his ship. The vessel rocks slightly from incoming hits, sparks flying off several off the panels around as we see members of the crew rushing back and forth, calling for medical teams or for repair crews to get kinetic barriers back online. Hackett barks out orders loudly, trying to keep his people working, fighting till their last breath.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Concentrate fire on the targets to Starboard! We need those bastards off our flank! Lieutenant Steed, contact the fleet! Tell them to fall back to the Sol Relay and regroup! We stay here another second and we lose this war!
A yeoman behind the Admiral suddenly looks up from her console.
YEOMAN: Admiral! The Crucible is activating!
Hackett’s brow furrows for a moment and he looks at one of the holo-displays to his left, showing a diagram of the Citadel. We can see an energy build up in the Presidium Ring.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Shepard…
He mutters under his breath, almost a slight smirk on his face, before bellowing out another order.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Lieutenant Steed, belay that last order! Tell all forces to advance! Now! This is our chance people! Let’s make it count!
We cut to a scene on the bridge of the Normandy. Joker’s hands fly around wildly on the control’s before him as he dodges incoming attacks and EDI follows up with quick surgical strikes on their targets. Over the comms you hear Lieutenant Steed’s voice.
LIEUTENANT STEED: All units advance. I repeat, all units advance. The Crucible is about to fire!
JOKER: Alright… This is it… You ready, EDI?
Joker glances over to EDI for a moment. She looks back to him and smiles slightly, reaching over and placing her hand on his.
EDI: I am ready, Jeff… For whatever happens.
He nods in response and looks back to the screen before him, taking off his baseball cap and throwing it down on the floor next to him.
We cut back out into space as the Alliance fleet begins mobilizing, followed by the Turian, Asari, Salarian, Quarian, Geth, Rachni… Everybody… pushing forward in a last desperate attempt, the Normandy at the head of the charge. We hear Joker speaking over the comms.
JOKER: Alright people, here we go! Keep together!
The Reaper forces start falling into formation as well, heading to meet this new oncoming push head on. Suddenly, just as the two sides are about to engage, a bright light appears in the Presidium ring, sending out a shockwave. Literally seconds after it hits, the Reaper ships start slowing down, their power fluctuating, leaving them practically helpless, floating out in space. On Earth, we see Reaper Destroyers falling to the ground, bringing down buildings with the force of their impact.
(NOTE: Depending on your Galactic Readiness as well as your military strength, this part may turn out very good or very bad, for example: The Normandy, may be destroyed or the fleets may be entirely obliterated, even with the Reapers in a weakened state, thus making activating the Crucible only a good option if you have the ability to actually beat the Reapers. Otherwise, they win.)
We see Admiral Hackett on the bridge of his ship again, watching as the Reapers start to power down, their weapons no longer working, their shields offline.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Now’s our chance! All forces open fire!
Cutting back to space, you see the fleets engage the helpless Reaper forces, their weapons cutting into them, blowing them apart. Cruisers and fighters skimming along the massive hulks, peppering them with missiles. On earth, we see gun ships opening fire on Reaper destroyers that are attempting to get back on their feet, infantry pummeling them with rockets and heavy artillery. Back in space, the Normandy is using its Thanix cannon (If you upgraded in ME2) slicing Reapers in half and watching the resulting pieces of it explode cataclysmically. Back on the bridge of the Normandy, Joke leans forward, putting everything he’s got into his actions, yelling as he watches the enemy fall around them.
JOKER: Wooohooo! Eat it, you sons of bitches!!
We cut to the bridge of Hackett’s ship again. He stands stalwartly, watching as the tides of the battle finally begin to turn in their favor. The crewmen around him are cheering. He looks over to Lieutenant Steed, sitting at the comm station.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Any word from Shepard?
Steed shakes his head in the negative. Hackett returns his gaze to the viewport silently.
Suddenly we’re back on the Citadel. Shepard opens his eyes to find himself on the floor of the large chamber where the Human Reaper is. Slowly and painfully he gets up to his feet, looking around and noticing that the floor of the chamber is littered with piles of human bodies, brought there so that they could be integrated into the hybrid Reaper. He looks around for his gun but cant find it and he slowly starts limping, trying to find a way out. The whole Citadel station seems to be shaking, a strange pulsing sound resounding through it.
Control is returned to the player here and Shepard staggers forward between the piles of bodies, trying to find his way out. Suddenly a hand reaches up and grabs Shepard’s ankle. Shepard struggles to get away but when he turns around, he sees Mordin lying in one of the piles, grabbing onto him, his eyes yellow like Harbinger’s, his voice having the same quality as the boy’s and Kaidan/Ashley’s earlier.
MORDIN: Didn’t have to be me. Could’ve done it yourself. Saved me!
A Reaper blare suddenly sounds off and Shepard claps his hands to his ears again, falling to his knees, obviously crippled with pain. This time however, it doesn’t go away. The camera rotates around Shepard, all the people he’s lost in his travels appearing and disappearing around him, accusing him.
BOY: You didn’t listen!
KAIDAN/ASHLEY: You had time! You could have come back for me! You left me to die!
MORDIN: Didn’t have to be me, Shepard!
THANE: You let me die, Shepard. You let him kill me.
LEGION: Shepard-Commander, this unit did not have to end. You could have opposed our decision.
BOY: Why didn’t you listen?!
(There could be more depending on who you lost at the end of the Suicide Mission in ME2)
Shepard cries out suddenly, getting back to his feet and swinging at the apparitions.
SHEPARD: No!!
Suddenly Harbinger drops down in front of Shepard, the ground rocking at its landing. Harbinger looks different however, it’s power seems to flicker on and off, it’s eyes not quite functioning. It’s words however seem… different. As if almost they’re coming from inside Shepard’s own head.
HARBINGER: Submit to us, Shepard. It is inevitable.
SHEPARD: I’ll never submit! I’ll never serve you!
HARBINGER: Then… You will die.
Harbinger’s beams start powering up and Shepard glances around desperately. Suddenly he notices a missile launcher off to his left in one of the piles of bodies and he dashes for it, narrowly avoiding one of the Reaper’s blasts before grabbing it and taking cover behind one of the large feeding tubes running up into the Human Reaper.
Control is returned to the player at this point. This is the last fight. The final battle with Harbinger, much like the final battle with Saren in ME1. There’s no tricks. No puzzles you need to work out to kill Harbinger. The only cover are the feeding tubes and Shepard jumps between them, firing off rockets whenever there’s a clearing. The fight goes on for a while, Harbinger slicing through the tubes with its beams, destroying the only thing keeping you alive, making it harder and harder as the battle goes on to find anywhere to hide.
Finally after slowly bringing Harbinger’s health down to a certain point, we switch back to a cutscene. Harbinger shoots a final beam, cutting a little too close to Shepard. The Commander is thrown back, his launcher destroyed. He struggles to get back to his feet but not in time. Harbinger is right on top of him, it’s eyes a mere few feet from him, it’s weapons powering up.
HARBINGER: You have failed Shepard. We will find another way.
Shepard stares back defiantly, knowing that this is the end.
Suddenly, out of nowhere a missile hit’s the side of the Reaper and it staggers back, trying to regain it’s balance. The Normandy’s second shuttle drops in, keeping up a constant fire on Harbinger. They stop just a few feet above the ground and Garrus, or whoever (Garrus for this example) jumps out and runs over to Shepard, who‘s barely conscious, pulling him up and helping him quickly back to the shuttle.
GARRUS: Taking a nap at a time like this, Commander?
SHEPARD: Garrus… What’re you… Get outta here! Just go!
GARRUS: Sorry Shepard, I’m not in your military remember? I don’t have to obey your orders…
Garrus pulls him into the shuttle and then mans the turret, firing at Harbinger as the shuttle begins to pull away.
GARRUS: Get us out of here, Lieutenant!
Vega nods, sitting in the pilot’s seat.
VEGA: You got it, amigo!
Shepard slumps down, holding his side, watching Harbinger through the side of the open shuttle as it turns to face them, its weapons powering up again. Garrus taps his comm-piece.
GARRUS: Normandy? Where going to need a strike. Now!
EDI responds over the comm.
EDI: Understood. Firing now. Please clear the blast radius.
We see a shot of the outside of the shuttle as it flies out of the Ward Arms, the doors sealing just before they hit vacuum. The Normandy approaches on an intercept course and then fires a single missile back into the Citadel. The weapon hit’s the incomplete Human Reaper and Harbinger, letting off a last blaring horn sound, turns to see to see it as it explodes, the entire ward arm of the Citadel fracturing, the Presidium ring becoming detached and falling down towards earth. In short, the Citadel literally comes apart at the seams.
Inside the shuttle, Garrus holds on as they’re jostled about a bit and Shepard winces, the rocking obviously making his wounds hurt even worse than they were before.
Outside, the Citadel blows up. Big. Pieces of the arms go flying off in almost every direction and the Shuttle enters the Normandy’s docking bay just in time. The Normandy does a 180 quickly and gets out of the shockwave as fast as possible, dodging debris all the way.
Finally, they ride out the explosion and the ship is seen regrouping with what’s left of the fleet, which is finishing off the last of the Reaper forces. We hear Joker and Hackett over the comms.
JOKER: This is the SSV Normandy, we have Commander Shepard. I repeat we have Commander Shepard.
ADMIRAL HACKETT: Good work, Normandy.
Down in the Normandy’s shuttle bay, we see Shepard being carried off the shuttle, his eyes barely staying open. The scene changes to his perspective. Everything is fuzzy, not quite on focus. The LI is there (If they weren’t killed) pleading with him to stay with them. Soon, the shot fades out to black.
Next scene starts out in the med-bay. Shepard wakes up, much like the shot where he woke up at the beginning of ME2. His face is bruised and scarred. He’s no longer wearing his burnt armor but instead his uniform now. He slowly opens his eyes and looks around, being blinded by the light for a moment. Suddenly he tries to sit up quickly.
SHEPARD: Harbinger… The Reapers.. Have to…
Dr. Michel or Dr. Chakwas is there, standing over him, and they hold him down, easing him back down onto the bed.
DR. MICHEL/DR. CHAKWAS: It’s alright, Commander. It’s alright. It’s over.
SHEPARD: Over… what’re you talking about? I need to…
Michel/Chakwas smiles slightly and you notice suddenly what’s left of Shepard’s team standing behind her, all of them suddenly realizing Shepard’s awake and moving over toward him.
DR. MICHEL/DR. CHAKWAS: No, Commander. You don’t. Not anymore. It’s over.
Shepard seems to stare at her for a moment, trying to comprehend her words before he finally starts to slowly relax, turning his gaze to stare up at the ceiling.
SHEPARD: It’s over…
He repeats quietly.
EPILOGUE
(In the Epilogue, we get to speak to all the team again, as well as Hackett and others, we find out the fate of Cerberus, see the state of the galaxy now that the Reapers for the most part have been wiped out, decide Shepard’s fate: like being promoted to Admiral, becoming the next councilor, retiring and settling down with his LI, etc.)
